18-12-2017 – Xmas Choir Killer Review

Well, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our readers!

I’ll keep this missive fairly short, as I am currently at work in between resolving work-type disasters, whilst trapped at a desk within earshot of the works annual Christmas Choir Carol Concert – I can’t get away, and I didn’t bring a flamethrower, so you’ll have to excuse the somewhat cursory nature of this one.

Last weekend provided a very entertaining surprise birthday party gig, held at a large film studio – enormous big studio, loads of guests, and more lighting effects than you could shake a very big stick at. We came, we set up, and at the allotted hour the Birthday boy was led in blindfolded, and on cue we launched into playing a heavy metallised version of Happy Birthday just as his blindfold we removed… a rather cool way to start a gig, I think. We managed to make enough noise to fill the large space adequately, thanks to the magic of Stuart Hitting Things Very Hard Indeed, and the rest of us cranking the amps rather more than they’re used to. Lovely!

Our favourite punter was the six-or-so-years-old little girl who spent the whole night dancing around, waving inflatable guitars, playing tambourine, and generally being completely in awe of Emma. And why not?

All in all a lovely night, and a substantial buffet… 😉

Right then, since this will probably be the last one of these until New Year, here’s what you can look forward to over the holiday season…

Sat 23rd – Woodlands Edge, Swindon
Expecting an unusually lively night here, there’s plenty of room for us to prance about in, so we may all be able to have so much fun that we forget we’re in Swindon…

Sun 24th – The Sandringham, Bromley Heath
‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all thro’ the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a four piece bunch of rawk’n’roll noise merchants with a hefty PA system and a complete disregard for public safety…

Saturday 30th – The Lamb, Marlborough
Lovely tiny little pub, very cosy indeed but always good fun to be had…

Sunday 31st – Fox & Hounds, Acton Turville
We played New Years’ eve here a few years ago, and they’ve been asking us back ever since – so here we are! Perhaps not least because last time they fed us a roast dinner, as I recall…

Okay, well, that’s your lot for this year. Looking back, I have to say we’ve had a blast – we’ve gotten through a record three singers this year, and although we were sorry to see our adored Rosa leave, we were very grateful to my wonderful Lily stepping in and keeping us going for several months, and are absolutely delighted to have Emma join us, although we can’t help wondering how – since we share exactly the same taste in idiocy – we hadn’t encountered her before.

On a personal note, I’d also like to say a huge thanks to Ben for being a great mate and complete silly bugger, and also to Stuart, who – despite being remorselessly teased – apart from being actually a superb drummer, does a fantastic job of organising everything, and stopping the wheels from falling off the entire enterprise.

So – that’s it for this year – and now if you’ll excuse me, I have an amateur works choir to strangle…
